4 Ways to Make Homework Time Easier and More Fun for Kids

getting kids ready for school

Let’s face it, homework is boring. After an entire day of paper, pencils and teachers, most kids will try to resist when you ask them to do their homework. Some will whine, others will procrastinate and there might even be tantrums and tears. It doesn’t have to be like that. We will be sharing four simple ways you can make homework more enjoyable for kids.

1. Set up a Fun and Creative Space for Homework

Working in a boring or distracting area can deter learning progress. To increase productivity and make homework less boring, create a workspace that your kids and even you would love to work in. Avoid busy areas of the house and distractions like the TV or any form of unnecessary technology should be put away. Have a nice table and comfortable chairs. Throw in some colour and inspirational posters around. Make sure the space is well-lit, keep supplies like paper, pencils, pen, glue and scissors within easy reach.

2. Work Together

Leaving your child to do homework by himself while the rest of the family is relaxing or watching TV can be very lonely for him. You can join him in the workspace, answer questions he has and accomplish some work of your own. Return emails, reply texts, create a budget, pay bills online, it doesn’t have to be serious work. Doing this, you’ll be leading by example, showing your child that he isn’t the only one working hard and you get to spend more time together.

3. Praise Their Efforts and Progress

Always show your child how you feel whenever they do their homework and school work diligently. You can give stars for assignments completed on time and place them on a chart in the homework space. They can also get rewards like seeing a fun movie, getting ice cream or a new game. Also stick up aced tests or art works on the chart or on the refrigerator. Just make sure they understand that getting good grades is for their future and not for treats.

4. Get Some Snacks

Motivate your child with some snacks while she does her homework. Snacks like popcorn, peanuts, energy bars, cookies and any other snacks she loves will do.

Kids are more successful in school when parents are actively interested in their homework and performance in school. It shows the kids that what they do is important.
