Keeping kids safe at school

By Janet Nsikan

Keeping Kids Safe at school is definitely on every parents mind. Sending the kids off to school each session comes with mixed emotions. It’s worse when it’s their first day in school. As soon as we walk them onto the school bus or to the School gate different kinds of feelings and emotions keep running through your mind.

That happy and sad feeling that your baby is growing up fast, that feeling of being relieved to be alone for few hours yet you miss your baby and can’t wait until he gets home. Then the “is he alright”? Keeps coming to mind.
We can’t be there in person to be sure our children are safe and well cared for but we can teach our children to be conscious of their safety and to express themselves in a way so that their needs are met.

Here are some tips you need to add to your Back to School List to keep your kids safe at school.

Have a family tradition where there are no secrets.
This is a very important tip every parent need to raise a happy child. Children need to know that they can come to their parents with anything. Make them feel they can opens up and tell you anything. Every parent must have information about their kid at their fingertips. If you tend to react and repress certain topics, that’s a move away from safety.

Teach your kids to respect others.
Respect is reciprocal. The simplest way to gain respect is to give respect. Help your child understand how their kindness and the respect they offer others can create a more peaceful environment for everyone. This applies both to students and adults. Giving respect is different from trying to be everyone’s friend. Not being disrespectful in the first place significantly lowers the odds of being hurt by a bad person.

Teach your children to be kind to those who are bullied.
We can stop bullying only when we stop ignoring that it exists. Bullying continue with the consent of those who choose to do nothing. All children are valuable, and none should be pushed around. Sometimes all it takes is for one other child to come alongside a bullied child, and the victim culture will fall away. So teach your children to be leaders in kindness as well as respect. As a parent, advocate for and support anti-bullying.

Know their environment (School)
Be present at your child’s school. Don’t wait for PTA or Open Day. Get to know the names of your child’s teachers and the administrators. Be visible! Be present!

Teach your child (and yourself) common sense survival skills.
Learn and make sure your child knows your school’s emergency response protocols. Panic usually occurs in response to confusion, so know the plan to avoid confusion.
